An old woman dies a slow, painful, claustrophobic death forgotten about by everyone but her 70 year-old daughter. finally, the old woman dies. I film them as they suffer together, as they suffer alone, as they make each other suffer, as they make me suffer, as I make them suffer while I film. I, the grandson, the son, the filmmaker, the prodigal abyss. Me, them, us, the dimensions of a 90 year-old grandmother's cell. As the Parkinson's shuts down her circuits and I watch the lights go out, she reaches out to me but I am not there. There is nothing I can do for her, so I do nothing. I film, I help her piss, I do not feel. I do not react. Or rather, I only react, I take no action. she is growing numb, soon she will be as numb as I am. It is all very hilarious.

Crazy Like They Are is the story of an American family, when the filmmaker's grandmother, Elizabeth Grossklaus, comes to live with his mother, Sharon Pearson, for the last four years of her life. The obtrusive, documentary film making style casts a cold, graphic eye on the aging process and shows the filmmaker/grandson to be ambivalent about those he should hold most dear. the story deals with the psychological patterns that had developed among the three of them over the course of life and their impact on their lives as Elizabeth's draws to a close. Could mood-altering electrodes be inserted into the brain to literally help a severely depressed person become happy? ABC News reports on Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), currently part of an extraordinary experiment in psychic surgery that only 50 patients worldwide have undergone. In an exclusive report, ABC News follows two women on their journey to discover whether DBS can help give them their lives back. One of the women, Cindy Warren, suffers from severe depression and has tried numerous treatments unsuccessfully, while the other woman, Kelly, suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder. Both women undergo a five hour experimental operation, where tiny electrodes are implanted in their brains -- in an attempt to rewire their mood centers. But while the procedure has been successfully used for Parkinson's disease for decades, the report looks at whether DBS is effective for the Cindy, Kelly and others. ABC News sits down with Dr. Ali Rezai at the Cleveland Clinic to discuss the rationale and risk around the controversial brain procedure, and whether the successes will outweigh the concerns.
